Happy Dragon Boat Festival!

It is double-fifth day in lunar calendar today and it is also the famous Dragon Boat Festival which is believed to have originated in ancient China. A number of theories exist about its origins and the best known of these relates to the suicide in 178 BCE of Qu Yuan, poet and statesman of the Chu Kingdom during the Warring States period.

The portrait of Qu Yuan.

Qu served in high offices. However, when the king decided to ally with the increasingly powerful state of Qin, Qu was banished for opposing the alliance. Qu Yuan was accused of treason. During his exile, Qu Yuan wrote a great deal of poetry, for which he is now remembered. Twenty-eight years later, Qin conquered the capital of Chu. In despair, Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

P/S: Both of us have bulgy forehead. Wuahahahaha!! XD

Then, why zongzi is eaten during Dragon Boat Festival??

P/S: Zongzi is a pyramid-shaped dumpling made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.

Zongzi served on Dragon Boat Festival.

Cartoonized zongzi. =P

The local people, who admired him, threw lumps of rice into the river to feed the fish so that they would not eat Qu Yuan's body. This is said to be the origin of zongzi!!

Now, why people carry out dragon boat race??

The local people were also said to have paddled out on boats, either to scare the fish away or to retrieve his body. This is said to be the origin of dragon boat racing!

Ok, that's all about the history of the festival. My family had already celebrated the festival yesterday because my superwoman sis-in-law Jennifer was scared that she will be tired to cook after work today since today is a normal working day. Therefore, we had all the 'ho-chiak' dishes yesterday! XD

There are prawns inside fried with flour! One of my favorite dishes! XD

Fish balls, Tauhu, Crab meats...

The chicken might look burnt but the taste is fantabulous!! And it's sweet in taste. =)

THE BEST DISH OF THE NIGHT!!

Salad Fish Fillets...

Fried Chicken...

Mixed Vegetables...

The soup...

No rice was served so we had Kuey Tiaw and Mee Hun! XP

Those were all the tasty dishes prepared by my sis-in-law, Jennifer Wong!! *Clap Clap Clap*

Those who is going to celebrate it today, enjoy your day and of course enjoy your meal!! XD

Happy Dragon Boat Festival!!

I'm in love with the ice-blended cappuccino from Secret Recipe! XP
